Beyond The Millennium

Finally, after a thousand years of God's reign on earth, the Millennium is over. God is a working and creating God who does not sleep. So why only a thousand years, nor two thousand, three thousand years or even more of God's reign on earth?

First, note that the Millennium is the seventh one thousand years since the creation of man, Adam. It is the Sabbatical Millennium, and so like other millenniums in the past, it is time bounded, limited to just one thousand years just like the days in a week.

Second, the Millennium is just the prelude of the true eternity, towards a truly perfect future. The work of God against evil is actually not yet completely finished. Remember that Satan was simply bound in the Abyss or Bottomless Pit (death) for the entire span of the Millennium, and after the thousand years are over, he shall be set free for a short time but only to fall again.

Rev 20:1-3
And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.

While it took six millenniums to fill up the earth, it should be expected that it will take considerably shorter time for the people of the Millennium to fill up the earth with perhaps more than the highest population density in history. There shall be no famine, wars, or diseases, not to mention a longer life span for people. Matter of course, population will multiply faster. Come to think of it—what will we expect? In a matter of a millennium, the earth shall be so full of people. Although there will be plenty of food, expect the earth to be very physically crowded by the end of the Millennium. Remember that it will still be the same physical Earth with a limited size. God will only recreate the Earth when the Millennium is already over (Rev 21:1).

Satan's eternal doom

Soon after the Millennium, Satan will be released from his "prison" or death and will be resurrected. The liberation of Satan will just mean his second death. Immediately after he is set free, he shall again deceive the nations, now already crowded with people, and maybe their minds are again deceived by worrying about survival. It is again the most appropriate time for God to test His people if they are truly qualified to enter true eternity. Read this:

Rev 20:7–10
When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

The people he will deceive are identified—Gog and Magog—again, the same people he deceived a thousand years earlier, during the Day of the Lord in a vain attempt to foil the plan of God. Read The Battle of Armageddon – The Great Supper of God for more details. For the second time, he will try harder; but he shall fail, and his defeat will be more swift and mighty. He shall not even be judged before God’s Great White Throne. Immediately, he shall be thrown to the lake of burning sulfur and be tormented forever.

Great White Throne Judgment, death conquered

All men will appear before the Great White Throne judgment. We do not know how long it will take for all the dead to be judged. It does not matter now, for eternity does not speak of time anymore. How painful will that be for those whose names were not found in the Book of Life. They too will be thrown to the lake of burning sulfur.

Rev 20:11-15
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The judgment of all peoples marks the start of man's eternity whether for eternal life or eternal doom. All the dead since the beginning of time shall be resurrected. The righteous will be tested for their reward and those who have not heard of Jesus will be tried if their lives will be worth saving. For more on the Judgment Day, read Two Questions on Judgment Day.  Great shall be the reward for those who persevered and died for Christ during the Great Tribulation. They will all be resurrected prior to the Millennium and will reign with Jesus for a thousand years and will live forever.

Rev 20:4-6
I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.

The same reward of imperishable bodies will be given to those who have persevered until the Second Coming of Jesus Christ as prophesied by Apostle Paul in 1 Cor 15:50-53.

New Heaven, new Earth, all the past forgotten

After everyone has been judged, God shall create new Heaven and new Earth. We do not know what the new earth’s feature will be like, its size, except that there shall be no more sea.

Rev 21:1-4
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

Note that during the Millennium, death will not be totally eliminated yet. Read The Millennium for an idea what we will expect during that time. For some, there will still be sin and death, pain and tears. After the Judgment, God will totally remove all these and He will wipe away the tears from all eyes. Our old earth and everything in it will disappear forever without a trace (Rev 20:11) and we will remember the past no more.

Isa 65:17
"Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind."

So for those believers who are wondering if they will still remember and feel sad about their fallen loved ones, friends or relatives, the answer is clear-- all of the past will be forgotten. There is no more place for sorrow and we will simply be overwhelmed by the glory of God.

The New City of Jerusalem

The City of Jerusalem will be restored and it will be an awesome, great city. The New City will be made by God Himself and shall descend from Heaven to the newly created Earth.

Rev 21:9-14
One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

The City will be square in shape surrounded by walls about 65 meters thick. The city will measure 12,000 stadia or 1,400 miles (2,200 kms) each side and height. That area is more than half of the United States. If this is the size of just a city, think of the size of a country in the new earth. If the future atmosphere is at least 1,400 miles high or thick, then the new Earth should be tremendously large! For the more details on this City, read Rev 21:15-27; 22:1-5.

What's Next after the Millennium?

But will eternity be spent on our new Earth alone? Eternity both includes time and space. I believe that God’s eternity will include the whole universe. How will we describe and measure eternity? Eternity far exceeds our farthest or longest imagination. God says He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. Therefore, God is eternity. He has unlimited plans for us not even revealed completely in the Bible. His plans are not only for earth alone! Later on we shall journey to the ends of the cosmos in the blink of an eye, witness the birth and death of a star and even the beginning of a new planet we ourselves shall take reign of individually! Sounds awesome, right? God is a creating God and can create the most impossible. Nothing is too hard for Him. If we only understand totally what His death on the cross and His shedding of His blood mean, it is easy also to understand that God is multiplying Himself through His Holy Spirit! If we become His temple, then we have His Holy Spirit, the same Spirit that descended to the House of Israel and Moses in the Holy Tabernacle during their journey to the wilderness, the same Spirit that appeared to the prophets.

Now read this simple, plain verse from the book of Romans:

Rom 8:14
Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

The Bible is not making figures of speech here anymore. It is a plain fact that by giving us the Holy Spirit, we become the sons of God. Jesus death means more than salvation. He gave us the power to reign with Him and become like Him through His Holy Spirit. Jesus is the firstborn of all creation (Col 1:15) and men shall follow after Him as second born, third born, and so on to the nth figure, so large that those reborn of the Holy Spirit and resurrected to everlasting life will multiply to number like the sand on the seashore and the stars in the heavens. We will become like Jesus, and through Him and for Him, we can do exactly what He can! Hallelujah! That is the true fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham. And yet there are rules to follow, and the way to eternity is not easy.

About the universe, Paul gave us a hint to seriously study with wisdom:

Rom 8:18–22
I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

In the passage, the creation denotes other things God made other than men or the earth and everything in it. In a manner of writing, the creation was in bondage and decay due to the downfall of man. As a result, their liberation is tied with the resurrection of the sons of God, the saved ones; for again in the manner of writing, those creations were made and intended for us. If we speak of eternity, the “creation” involves the planets and every heavenly body. Each one of them is suspended in the sky aimlessly, none supports life, they are in utter decay. Time will come when God will recreate everyone of them, one by one for man's eternal habitation! That is why when it is written that God will create new Heavens, that will surely mean to say the creation of new habitable planets, new stars, galaxies, and a more beautiful universe of which men will subdue and fill up!

Eph 4:10
He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe
.
