Are There Earth-Like Planets?

Astronomers announced in excitement recently that soon they will be able to find a planet somewhere in the universe that can support life. In Washington, a NASA official declared:

Men has been for ages longing for the time to see a living planet. Movies like Avatar helped satisfy that fantasy but it is only true to imagination.

"Astronomers say they are on the verge of finding planets like Earth orbiting other stars, a key step in determining if we are alone in the universe. A top NASA official and other leading scientists say that within four or five years they should discover the first Earth-like planet where life could develop, or may have already. A planet close to the size of Earth could even be found sometime this year if preliminary hints from a new space telescope pan out." (Yahoo News).

"In their search for a planet that looks like Earth -- comfortably bathed in sunshine in a pleasant solar system where life would be easy come easy go -- astronomers keep turning up the strangest things. They've found a planet with the density of Styrofoam. They've found two planets with surfaces hotter than molten lava. They've found two inexplicable planet-sized objects that for some reason are hotter than the stars they orbit. Scientists have never seen anything like this before." (The Washington Post)

Another news released two years ago by Vatican declaring that there could be alien beings somewhere in the universe and it is ok to believe in aliens.

"The Vatican's chief astronomer says that believing in aliens does not contradict faith in God. The Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, said that the vastness of the universe means it is possible there could be other forms of life outside Earth, even intelligent ones. In an interview published Tuesday by Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, Funes said that such a notion "doesn't contradict our faith" because aliens would still be God's creatures." (MSNBC World News)

The world is being saturated by news stories and movies (Star Wars, Star Trek, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Avatar, etc.) indicating that there are planets similar to Earth and many - even Christians are believing we are not alone. Does the bible say anything about aliens in other planets? Is it really not contradicting what the bible says? Let's find out.

First let us realize that the universe is a vast expanse of space and matter spanning billions of light-years across, or even more. Nobody knows exactly the size of the universe. A light-year is the distance traveled by light in one year. Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. Therefore in one year, light could have already traveled 5,865,696,000,000 miles. Now we are talking of billions of light-years or even beyond -- that's eternity and beyond. Only God knows the limit of eternity. The stars, galaxies, "planets" that our astronomers are seeing right at this moment through telescopes are in fact very old images that have just reached Earth recently. Those space objects may no longer be the same in their present states. The heaven is so big so that planets and stars are just like a mere dust in the midst of an ocean.

The Bible says

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Gen 1:1).

Take note that heavens here is plural-- many heavens. To some, heaven mean it is where God lives and where believers will be taken to after the resurrection. That's alright. However, we should be particular on what kind of heaven we are talking about.

Yet others would say that the heaven is the universe and somewhere out there in the universe is the abode of God. That is also alright.

When Jesus was still on earth, he spoke of the Parable of the Ten Minas.

He mentioned to the one who earned ten minas more: "...take charge of ten cities."

To the other servant who earned five minas more: "You take charge of five cities."

And to the one who never gained any, He said: "Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas."

Very close to the time of His crucifixion, Jesus assured His grieving apostles:

In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you (John 14:2).

In other versions, the room is translated as 'mansions'. Now, let us open our understanding with these passages. If God resides in the heavenly places which we sure know is a big place in the universe, then a room with respect to God's abode or universe is not the size of a literal room of a mansion. It should be a lot bigger than that. If a planet is like a dust in the universe, then a room in the heavenly abode should not be a size of an earthly room of a mansion. We should also expect that if he promised five or ten cities, it will mean much bigger things than earthly cities. Remember, after the Millennium, we should only be expecting heavenly things not earthly things. Earthly things, or small things will be things of the past.

Solomon once said when he dedicated the Temple in 1 Kings 8:27:

"But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!

King Solomon, the wisest man that ever lived spoke of the highest heavens where God resides. It could also be the farthest heaven. Therefore, when God promised us mansions or rooms, we should not be expecting just a room or a mansion. He is actually promising us big planets where which we shall dwell. When Jesus spoke to His disciples, he related to them using plain, simple earthly words because they can not understand difficult heavenly things.

I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? (John 3:12)

It is God's ultimate mission to reach out to the ends of the universe (heavens) and fill it with life. With billions of galaxies and billions of stars and solar systems, think how many planets are out there and how many eternities there will be before we could colonize each one of them. Right now, the Bible says those planets are still dead in decay. Shown on top are never before seen sea of galaxy in the ‘deepest ever’ view of the universe, called the Hubble Deep Field (HDF), made with NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. Above are more galaxies taken also by the Hubble Space Telescope known as Hubble Ultra Deep Field, deepest image of the universe ever taken in visible light. Soon, the sons of God shall reach the “deepest” corner of the universe in the blink-of-an eye speed.

When Jesus had ascended to Heaven where the Father is, He said, "I am going there to prepare a place for you." Do you really know what it means? He is preparing the planets for us. Right then when he mentioned this promise, no habitable planet existed, not one. All are dead planets. When He also promised five or ten cities as a reward for a good steward, calculate how many cities will be needed to reward all believers since the beginning of time. Certainly, our earth alone can not handle the numbers.

Paul mentioned very important fact about the universe when he said:

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. (Rom 8:18-22).

In the passage, the creation denotes other things God made other than men, the Earth and everything in it. In a manner of writing, the creation was in bondage and decay due to the downfall of man. As a result, their liberation is tied with the revelation of the sons of God, the saved ones, for again in the manner of writing, those creations were made and intended for us. If we speak of eternity the “creation” involves the planets and every heavenly body. Each one of them is suspended in the sky aimlessly, none supports life, they are in utter decay. Jesus right now is creating living planets for us-- millions of them for our habitation for eternity! That is why when it is written that God will create new heavens, that will surely mean to say the creation of new habitable planets, new stars, galaxies and a more beautiful universe!

As Paul again wrote:

He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe (Eph 4:10).

What will God fill the universe with after eons of decay? He shall surely fill it with life as He did to Earth six thousand years ago. This time there shall be hundreds, or thousands, or millions of habitable Earths for the universe is an unlimited space for God’s unlimited power and ever multiplying sons of God. If He promised ten cities, He meant ten beautiful planets.

During Paul’s days, people had no idea of what the universe is—its size, and its elements. There were no telescopes, no radars to examine the universe. Now we understand. We now know that the universe is eternal space of countless galaxies, stars and planets. Now we can realize what Paul meant and what the Divine Plan is all about.  God intends to fill the whole universe with the sons of God; people who are washed clean by God’s own blood and became worthy to rule with Him for eternity. This is a plain truth few understood. It is a simple passage requiring in fact, not much wisdom. This promise is for all to understand revealed thousands of years ago so that we will be filled with hope that God is there surely working to prepare a place for all of us.  He is preparing a home, a city, a kingdom and planets for you and me. It is for us to take His offer for a place in the heavens, the universe!

Now, back to the question, are there Earth-like planets somewhere in he universe? Surely there are! Jesus started creating them 2000 years ago. However, since they may be millions of light years away, the images of those new planets have not yet reached us. Another thing, however, there are no inhabitants yet in those new planets. There are no alien beings out there. Those planets, as Paul said are waiting for the children of God to liberate them from utter decay. They are waiting for us to inhabit them but that will not happen until all is finished. After the Millennium is over, God will put finishing touches as He will recreate new a new Heaven and new Earth. Earth is the launching pad for all other planets. Earth is the firstborn of all the planets. Soon we will travel across the universe not by millions of years time but by the blink of an eye speed because in spirit, time, matter and space are no more! Amen!

Aim for that glorious future. It is futile for man to reach the nearest habitable planet. The surest ticket to the living planets is already mentioned in the Bible. We must become a Christian, we must have Jesus and the Spirit of God. Any other way is impossible.

In order for you to get saved and become a Christian please follow these simple steps.
