How Close Are We To The End?

Many people are asking, how close are we to the Second Coming? to the Great Tribulation? All sums up the basic question-- how close are we to the end?

There is a very simple answer to that as the Bible says: "...no one knows about the day or hour..." (Matt 24:36). That's it!

So no one really knows. But the answer does not stop there. Notice what the Bible says-- the day and the hour. Those are the two things we don't know about so the next question would be: Are we able to know the approximate year or month of the end? I say the end because the "end" to many will mean different things. The end may be when the Antichrist starts to kill believers or when the day of gloom and darkness. To many the end is the coming of Jesus Christ. Regardless, are we able to know the times close to these events? The answer is yes. Why? Because the Bible tells us the signs before the end of ages. Read Matthew 24 and notice the many signs that are visible that signifies that the end is near.

So what can we expect to see immediately before the time of Christ's return? I will give answers biblically. But let us read Matthew 24:1-42:

Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings.

“Do you see all these things?” he asked. “I tell you the truth,  not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came  to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

Jesus answered:  “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, `I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you  are  not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in  various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time  many will turn  away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. “So when you see standing in the holy place `the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel— let the reader understand— then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the house. Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now— and never to be equalled again. If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. At that time if anyone says to you, `Look, here is the Christ!’ or, `There he is!’ do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect— if that were possible. See, I have told you ahead of time. “So if anyone tells you, `There he is, out in the desert,’ do not go out; or, `Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.

“Immediately after the distress of those days “`the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ “At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.

“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.

So the important signs we derive from here are:

a. False Christs

The signs that Jesus gave seem to focus more on the things that tend to threaten our spiritual life. That is because He was more concerned with our salvation than physical safety whether it is the end of age or not.

Jesus first signs therefore are the false “christs”. False christs in pre-tribulation period are not literal person that appears before men performing wonders but they are false Christian religions the world over that deceived men claiming they are the true church. None in fact has ever qualified to match the true, simple doctrine of the original faith that Jesus and the Apostles preached. Their church claimed no names except Christian Church. Their religion prohibited a credit to any man who brought Christ into their lands, which may incite division within the Church (Read 1Cor 1:12-13). Today the world’s Christians are divided many times over. Christianity has become the most confused religion with thousands of sects that have mushroomed through the ages. God has become the laughing stock of the pagan worship. Only few today have the Holy Spirit to reveal the Truth into their hearts. They may belong in any false religions but reject their false teachings. Actually they can stay even in Hell and be saturated with evil doctrines but still stick hard into the Truth according to their faith. One can only identify them by their fruits and yet it requires the same Holy Spirit in another person for him to know these fruits. The true Christians today are intermixed within the jungles of “Christian” religions. The first signs are intended to such kind of Christians and to all whom the Spirit chooses. However, many are already deceived, rooted deep in false teachings so that they become the enemy of the Truth— no amount of preaching can reverse their belief. Only God is able to bring the lost to true Christianity through the coming distress.

b. Wars and Rumours of Wars

Taiwanese soldiers stand alert by their anti-aircraft batteries early March 6,1996 due a tension building up between Taiwan and mainland China.

According to World Disasters Report 1995 by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent there were 56 armed conflicts that took place in 1995 in the entire world compared to 34 only 25 years ago. These have produced 16 million refugees and some 26 million internally displaced people.

There is practically no safe region in the world today. Consider the following: In northeast Asia probable flashpoints are between and among China, Taiwan, Russia, Japan, North and South Korea involving political differences and territorial disputes. In Southeast Asia, the Spratly and Paracel islands are creating stir among claimant nations including China and Taiwan. In South Asia are the old enemies, India and Pakistan still trading word wars and small boundary exchange of fire. In Europe, there is a danger of war in the Balkan Peninsula or from the former Yugoslavia spreading to all the European continent. This war is one most potentially dangerous since it involves both political and religious differences between Christians and Muslims. In Russia, the former Soviet Union, there is the war of Chechnyans fighting for independence that can spread into global scale. In America, there is practically no war that the US is not involved with not as participant but as responsibility to keep peace being the only world superpower. Its foreign policy requires the nation to assist a friendly nation in trouble specially if it imperils national interest. So is the tension in Middle East involving the old enemy, Iraq. Soon a global war will be ignited through him starting in Europe.

The media always provide account of wars that are going on and potential armed conflict from around the world. The wars come and go and new wars happen. Conflicts have become a part of our lives but as the Bible says the end is still to come.

They Say Peace When There is No Peace . . .

They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. "Peace, peace, "they say, when there is no peace.” (Jer 8:11)

The leaders of Judah, now Israel pursued peace by all means it thought would bring lasting peace. It gave away territories for peace, sacrificed national interest and pride. Finally they thought they had peace at last.

In former Yoguslavia, the war in Bosnia, Herzagovina was stalled due to peace talks between warring factions. There is peace, it seemed.

Everywhere there is hostility and trouble: India against Pakistan, North Korea against South Korea,  Israel against the Arabs, so forth and so on. Peace negotiation is always the adopted strategy to revive peace.

Peace according to the Bible is not what the world knew how it can be achieved. Our worldly peace is volatile, war can happen anytime. Peace is not merely an absence of hostilities. It is something that only God can give.

c. Famines

The Worldwatch Report of 1995 reveals that the world grain stocks hit an all-time low in 1995. The world will face food shortages and steep rises in wheat, rice and corn prices unless a concerted effort is mounted to replenish reserves. The world has only 48 days worth of grain reserve, said Lester Brown, president of the independent environmental and social research group. “Once stocks fall under 60 days (a minimum) of consumption, prices begin to rise and become highly volatile,” he said.

Sandra Postel, a researcher and the head of the Global Water Policy in Cambridge Massachusetts warned that there is worldwide shortage of fresh water and in the poorest part of the world— and the increasing fight over water resources will threaten security in those regions. The fact that more water groundwater is being pumped up from rivers than is being replenished is another serious problem, primarily in the world’s large agricultural areas such as northern China, the Punjab in South Asia and the United States, she said. The lack of water has led to serious trend— large irrigated areas are decreasing in the world, while populations are increasing.

One of the most frightening of environmental threats is the buildup of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This would result in the global warming and climatic change and according to scientists could cause severe droughts, melting ice caps, rising sea levels, coastal flooding, severe storms and other climate-related calamities.

Global warming therefore will hit water and food supplies  in developing countries, said Sir John Houghton, a British scientist and chairman of Britain Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. He said global warming did not just mean everyone got a little warmer. Entire weather systems were becoming disrupted, with the result that areas which already get heavy rainfall will get more, while dry areas will get less. There are already significant tensions, especially in regions where water from major river systems is shared between nations. It is not surprising that the Secretary General of the United Nations has suggested that wars in the future are likely to be about water rather than oil, he said.

Today, severe droughts are being felt in many parts of the world while other nations are experiencing abnormal climatic changes. The Chinese capital, Beijing is experiencing drought conditions for the fourth straight year causing the most serious damage in a century, the official China Daily reported in April 1995. While just south in Tibet, snowstorms have left 30,000 farmers suffering frostbite, snow blindness, or disease. It was the worst snowstorm in the last 100 years, reported an independent Hong Kong newspaper, Ming Pao Daily in May 1, 1993.

The winter of 1994-1995 tied the 1953-54 season at 36.03 degrees Celsius for the second warmest winter in a century of record keeping in the United States, says the National Climatic Data Center. In 1991-1992 season was the warmest winter in the century at 36.6 degrees Celsius, normally a summer temperature. However, in New York City, the 1995-1996 winter season was recorded as the whitest winter ever with snowfall registering a 63.7 inches, says the National Weather Service.

Other nations are also experiencing the same problem and there is no end in sight.  This is only the beginning of even worse food shortage in the near future.

c. Earthquakes

Tokuji Utsumi, deputy chief of the Earthquake Prediction Committee of Japan warned that the earthquake that tore through the Russian island of Sakhalin, the devastation of Kobe, Japan and several other recent quakes may signal heightened activity and danger ahead in the Pacific “Ring of Fire”.

Several tectonic plates meet in the northwestern Pacific, which makes up the top half of an extremely volatile area that scientists call the Pacific’s Ring of Fire, where much of the world’s seismic and volcanic activity is focused. Utsumi said the Kobe quake could touch off more activity in the northwestern Pacific region particularly Japan. The Kobe 7.1 magnitude quake last January 17, 1995 was Japan’s worst tremor in 70 years and the deadliest than all the shakers of 1994 combined.

Below is the chart of earthquake occurrence of any magnitude from 1973 to 2006, a 33 year period (Source: http://www.earth.webecs.co.uk/).

In recent years, earthquakes have been more frequent and devastating than all the previously recorded quakes combined. In the 9th century there was only one major quake, in 11th century there were two, 3 in the 13th, 2 each in 16th and in 17th, 5 in the 18th, 9 major quakes in 19th, and in 20th century already exceeded a hundred mark— more than tenfold increase from the last century. In 1995 alone there were already eleven (11) major quakes registering a magnitude of 7 and higher, some according to the sources were the strongest to hit their countries in a century.

For more information on the latest worldwide earthquake occurrences visit USGS.

The earthquake that hit Port-au-Prince was the deadliest to hit Haiti in centuries. Nearly 100,000 are estimated to have died in the disaster. Earthquakes are becoming very more frequent and powerful. Picture source: CNN

d. Religious Persecutions

The one most common cause of war and disunity in any part of the world is religion. The world is continually divided all through the ages due to differences in religious ideology. It is an accepted fact that a nation’s strength and success rely on national unity primarily either in politics or religion. The world consists of about one-fourth Christians belonging to subdivided sects, one-fourth Muslims, another fourth with miscellaneous beliefs such as the Hindus, Buddhists, etc. and another fourth, atheists.

The accounts here of Jesus about great religious persecutions obviously will happen during the reign of the Antichrist when he would attempt to unify the world in just one religious belief. As already discussed earlier, the coming new world order under the Antichrist will be an alliance of both the communist and Muslim worlds. Both possess a paramount hatred of Christianity.

In fact, the preview of the future persecutions can already be seen today. In Saudi Arabia, according to Amnesty International, persecution of Christians has increased dramatically since the Gulf crisis of 1990. The religious crackdowns are not only limited to Christians but also to fellow Muslims who belong to different denomination such as the Shia Muslims. This is being done to unify the Arab world into one, single religion. The same report said a Shia convicted of apostasy and blasphemy was beheaded in 1993 and hundreds of Shias and Christians have been detained just for expressing their beliefs and scores have been tortured and flogged.

In communist China, a new law against religion was passed in January 1994 banning foreign proselytizing and forbidding churches from “destructive”, independent, unauthorized or overseas-financed activities. Since the law was passed, Amnesty International reported of foreign Christians from various countries being detained and arrests of Protestant preachers and Catholic leaders being arrested or placed under restrictions.

Nations think that a Christian moral fibre today is weak and loose and now consider Islam superior.

In early eighties, some Middle East terrorists coined the term Islamic Jihad or the Islamic Holy War whose purpose is to destroy the enemies of Islam and pursue the cause of Islamic fundamentalism. Since then, they had already claimed responsibility to a series of bombings, murders and kidnappings against the US, French, British and Israeli personnel and installations. Now it becomes obvious that their victims are their old biblical enemies, the key players of current world events and the chosen people of God. It is the same as before— Jacob against Esau.

The coming great war shall be founded on the cause of Islam. A nation at war fighting for a religious cause shall be driven by anger and hate and have the will power to win by all means.

The Bible says they will succeed for an appointed time for that is exactly how the end was planned (Isa 10: 5-10).

The coming religious persecutions during the reign of the antichrist shall be more devastating . . . a great slaughter, world-scale genocide. However, Jesus gave us an assurance by saying:

“Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.” (Mark 13:11)

Equipped with this advance warning it becomes relatively easy for a Christian to prepare himself for future persecutions by identified enemies. Nonetheless, the devil shall not stop from mere persecutions alone—by all ways and means he will cause many Christians to fall. False prophets, false Christs shall appear deceiving, dividing and turning many away from faith.

All kinds of trials shall befall all Christians but Christ knew this in advance, warning us before these things happen. Remember that Christ shall only appear for the first time when all the saved shall have already gathered together after the great homecoming in the Mount of Olives in the same manner as when He ascended to Heaven.

e. The Gospel Preached to the Whole World

Jesus did not reveal the exact year of His coming but one sure sign close to that one is when the preaching of the Gospel to the whole world is finally completed. No, this awesome task of worldwide evangelization shall not be done by men specially at the height of worldwide Christian persecution. This event, according to the chronology it was written shall occur during the times when false Christs and prophets begin to appear deceiving many. One can just imagine the degree of confusion it will be . . . it is so hard anymore what to believe and whom. Only those with the Holy Spirit shall discern what is the way and the truth.

As already discussed in Chapter 6, Moses and Elijah shall come again to bring the good news to all peoples. To assist them in fulfilling this prophecy is an angel from the Lord.

Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth— to every nation, tribe, language and people. (Rev 14:6)

f. Pregnant Women and Nursing Mothers . . .

This is another consequence of worldwide war and purge. The book of Isaiah tells us of women and youths ruling over God’s people and about women in disgrace.

Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. O my people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path. (Isa 3:12)

In that day seven women will take hold of one man and say, “We will eat our own food and provide our own clothes; only let us  be called by your name. Take away our disgrace!” (Isa 4:1)

Apparently, there will be only few men left in those days as a result of wars and worldwide purge. Women shall be ravaged as lawlessness and evil spread. Able-bodied men shall be eliminated sparing the women and the youth as a strategy for physical and ideological regeneration.

g. Winter and the Sabbath

A meteor or an asteroid may strike earth anytime without warning. The Bible says, "the heavenly bodies shall be shaken" (Matt 24:29)

Again this is explained already in topic, The Day of The Lord. If one is accustomed to winter, then why should we pray to prepare ourselves for the end-day winter and Sabbath? Will there be any difference?

"...Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath..."

The sign spoken of by Jesus here is not an ordinary winter and Sabbath. The Sabbath is the seventh year of Daniel’s One-Week prophecy. The seventh day is the Sabbath year and the Day of the Lord. And it shall come with a very cold worldwide winter not as a cause of ordinary climactic change but due to the “shaking” of the heavenly bodies (Matt 24:29). There shall be no light neither from the sun, nor the moon nor the stars for they shall not be visible. There shall be total darkness over all the earth.

This is a direct effect resulting to a heavenly body striking the earth. Whether it will be a comet or a meteor, we are not sure. But we know now that there are millions of comets surrounding the solar system. This is verified by the astronomers who used the Hubble Space Telescope. For forty years this remained just a theory. Anita Cochran, leader of a team of astronomers from the University of Texas, Austin, and the Southwest Research Institute of in Boulder, Colorado, were able to pick 30 comet-like objects in Kuipper Belt. The Kuipper Belt is like an icy belt surrounding the whole solar system and is thought to extend out at least 50-100 astronomical units (one astronomical units is the average distance between the Earth and the sun, about 142 million Kms.). Based on the density of the objects within the areas observed, Harold Levison of Southwest Research Institute said that there are at least 100 million and more like a billion or 10 billion comets out in the Kuipper Belt.

An example of wayward comet hitting a planet such as the one mentioned in Rev 8:10 was witnessed by the whole world in pictures when fragments of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 hit the giant planet Jupiter last July 1994. Its co-discoverer, Eugene Shoemaker said that few people paid much attention to the dangers posed by rocks in outer space and impacts of comets are serious, that they really do happen. In the same way, the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet is God’s reminder and warning that it shall happen to our own earth from any of the millions of comets out in there far heavens.

When that happens, a great earthquake and tsunamis shall occur around the world with great magnitude such as not been since the beginning of time. Dust and clouds and darkness will cover the earth, forests will burn and waters poisoned, temperature will drop tremendously and explosive lightning will lit the sky. The distress of the Day of the Lord is far worse than the days of the Antichrist or the tribulation period. Jesus tells us to pray that we may escape the days of winter and the Sabbath and be a part instead of the Great Exodus.

Jesus’ signs of the end of age are somewhat toned down and summarized. Other prophets give much more terrible accounts.

In the book of Deuteronomy, The Lord through Moses had warned Israel of severe punishments against disobedience saying:

The LORD will also bring on you every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law, until you are destroyed. (Deut 28:61)

I will send wasting famine against them, consuming pestilence and deadly plague; . . . (Deut 32:24)

A series of new and re-emerging diseases including AIDS, the Ebola virus, tuberculosis, bubonic plague and yellow fever are threatening the health of the world, the World Health Organization warned in Washington last October 17, 1995.

“The recent outbreaks have shown that the potential of epidemics is now vastly increased by the speed by which they are able to spread and by the unprecedented size, concentration and mobility of populations,” WHO Director General Hiroshi Nakajima said”.

Some diseases including gonorrhoea, dysentery, and malaria are showing increasing resistance to antibiotics, the WHO added. Dr. Philip E. Coyne, medical review officer in the US Food and Drug Administration noted the emergence of bacteria that can not be killed by current arsenal of antibiotics . . . it could become a public health threat worse than AIDS, experts warn. Diseases considered conquered— tuberculosis, pneumonia, meningitis, staph infections are becoming unstoppable. Diphtheria, a disease thought until recently virtually to have been eradicated, killed 1,742 people in eastern Europe and central Asia in 1994, according to the UN report in Geneva last June 20, 1995.

The worst flood in 60 years had swept the European continent last February 1995. Heat wave in India reached an all-time high of over 50 degrees Celsius in June 1995. Hailstones as big as basketballs, rainstorm and tornado simultaneously pounded China’s southern province of Guangdong last April 20, 1995. “We have hailstones, rainstorms and tornadoes every year but it is rare for all three to hit on the same day," one official said.

These are just a few of strange disasters occurring in the world today. What do these all mean? A week earlier before the WHO report, the UN disaster reduction experts said that earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and other natural disasters are increasing at an average of six percent (6%) a year. In three decades before 1992, there were 787 disasters with death tolls over 100, more than one-fourth of them in the final five years (1988-1992), according to UN figures. In the same period, 241 natural events caused damage amounting to 1% of the affected country’s total annual GNP. Half of those occurred in the last ten years (1983-1992).

h. Falling Away and Apostasy

The New King James version mentioned it "the falling away" in 2Thess 2:3--

Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition,...

Here a British public transit bus with advertisement banner declaring "THERE'S PROBABLY NO GOD. NOW STOP WORRYING AND ENJOY LIFE." This was also done in Canada and the US. Source: BBC News

Falling away or some people call apostasy is when believers turns away from faith. In our age, Islam is the fastest growing religion and Christianity is slowly being outnumbered. Traditional Christian nations are now drifting away towards Islamic faith. A recent survey in the US showed the America is becoming less Christian. In Canada, another poll showed that one in four persons don't believe in God. In many schools across North America and Europe, the traditional morning prayer was abolished. Religious symbols are taken out of government offices and public places. All over the world, atheism is on the rise.

Even in the Christian churches, members are committing adultery, abortion, and divorce. There is no more fear in God even within His own family. The worst is till to come when total unbelief is overwhelming because many will be drawn to the Antichrist. To them, their end was foretold that they will believe in the lies of the Antichrist. Read 2Thess 2:11-12:

And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

i. Rebels Will Become Completely Wicked

In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a stern-faced king, a master of intrigue, will arise.
Dan 8:23

Before the Antichrist will come, rebels and terrorist will become very violent and wicked. We have seen 9-11, we have seen the killings and suicide bombings but we have not yet seen the worst. These have been prophesied to get even more violent as the end nears. Expect similar 9-11s and rebels overpowering government leaders to their knees.

j. The Abomination That Causes Desolation

In the book of Mark, the “Holy place” is simply referred as “where he (or it) does not belong”. This place was already explained in the topic The Great Tribulation. It was identified as the United Nations headquarters, which the Antichrist shall utilize as his worldwide command center. The prophecy also suggests that the original nation of the Antichrist will be expelled UN membership. The mystery words “Holy place” or “where he (or it) does not belong” also means the UN building shall be utilized oppositely from a headquarters of peace to a headquarters of war and terror.

When we see an evil world ruler sits in the UN, then the end is just a matter of two and one-half years away. By then, those who are survivors of a Great War shall see the most terrible bloodshed the world has seen.

The United Nations is an organization formed to promote peace. Soon it will be turned into a control center for terror. As the Mark 13:14 says "When you see `the abomination that causes desolation' standing where it does not belong-- let the reader understand- then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains."

The day of infamy the world won't ever forget-- the 911. It has changed the world and it will continue unto the end.

Other Signs To Come:

In this topic, we shall trace past biblical events that had become signs of impending disasters. Surely these signs shall happen again in the modern day version. Jesus had started it from Noah and we shall continue from then.

1. As It Was in the Days of Noah...

As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. (Matt 24:37-39)

Jesus gave us a hint that prior to His coming, history shall be repeated, confirmation of past events, of the covenant God made with man. Read chapter 4 about the topic on "Confirmation of the Covenant." Despite the abnormalities the world over, men shall continue to be wicked, always rejecting the Truth. Men are marrying and giving in marriage. Divorce and abortions are done routinarily. Drugs, alcohol, and pornography are prevalent having no respect or fear to authorities. Paul the apostle foresaw our days when he wrote to Timothy, his disciple:

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-- having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth-- men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. (2Tim 3:1-8)

2. As It Was In The Days Of Tower Of Babel . . . (Gen 11:1-8)

Just after Noah’s flood, men again began to multiply and all the peoples had just one language. Nimrod and his people decided to make a tower that reaches up to heaven to make a name for them lest they scatter over the face of the earth. The great flood being still fresh from memory (Noah was still alive then), it was obviously designed to be so high to serve another purpose – to serve as a place of refuge in the event flood will happen again. They shall survive without ever constructing an ark and be drifted to distant lands. In short, the ark was constructed simply as an act of pride and survival. It was a complete turnaround of God’s will on how man should have attained life or survival – that is simply to obey and worship Him. Eventually, those people got what they deserved – instead of unity, they scattered; instead of honor, shame.

This sense of pride and survival remain with us today. Man tries to look for survival not by building edifices and towers anymore but through more ambitious means, utilizing all of man’s collective knowledge by reaching to the far reaches of heavens, the limit of his ability – the outer space. The United States has developed and perfected the space shuttle to conduct researches and studies on the possibility of man colonizing space and other terrestrial places. It has continued to do so now to the extent of making partnership with her space rival, Russia, to jointly develop a space station in outer space for purposes still a mystery to man. The world has become one again speaking in one language, and soon men shall revive that old ambition of seeking survival in the heavens against God’s own will; then the end will come. God’s way toward the stars is not through man’s power and knowledge.

If we remain faithful in Him, He shall lead us to the stars across the universe through the end of the cosmos in a wink of an eye!

Before Jesus arrives, there shall be another attempt to build a high tower, the tallest skyscraper in the world. Like in the days of Nimrod, this will be constructed by worldwide unified effort as a monument to the New World Order. The Lord Jesus Christ will then come during its construction and will be left unfinished.

3. As It Was in the Days of Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 19 1:29)

Daring and proud of their homosexuality-- these gays at left suggest during the Gay-Pride Parade in New York City. At right are kissing pairs of same-sex marriages during a historic-making public ceremony, March 25, 1996 in San Francisco, CA, USA.

One particular sign we can notice from this event is the domination of “strange flesh,” the gays and homosexuals that abound during those times.

Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom-- both young and old-- surrounded the house. They called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them." (Gen 19:4-5)

Many agree that the AIDS epidemic is a scourge from heaven meant for the homosexuals and drug users. Gays are becoming very aggressive and daring. Now they have become a common part of society, get involved in sensitive post in government, businesses, in military, arts and sports, films and the media, and are able to impose their will.

In New York, authorities are helpless on gay-sponsored annual Gay-Pride Parade. Over tens of thousands reveal their true identity, join the parade dressed as fairies and females and celebrate their homosexuality. No other than the US President Bill Clinton himself expressed support to gay rights bill which is about a federal ban on job discrimination against homosexuals. Although it is not wrong per se, the measure rather promotes homosexuality rather than to correct the menace which it can become in the long run. Many nations are blind to the issue of homosexuality. Not knowing the problem in the first place is worse a problem a nation will have. Let us take the lesson from Sodom and Gomorrah that burned to the ground. The homosexuals today have dawned at their own right time and places.

New York City is the birth place of Gay Pride in 1970, at the Stonewall Inn. See the article in "Is the Gay Pride Ever Mentioned in the Bible?"

4. As It was In the Days Of Joseph And The Famine (Gen 41-47)

Before the great seven-year famine of Egypt and Canaan, there was a full seven years of abundance, a fulfillment of the Pharaoh’s dream as interpreted by Joseph. The climax of the famine was when Joseph made himself known to his brothers and father Jacob. Egypt as we have learned is the United States of America today. Its seven-year of abundance is currently being enjoyed both in wealth, food and power. After the end of the Cold War in 1991, the US reigns supreme in power rivaled by no other nations.  She provides food for many hungry nations, imposed her own will against her enemies. After seven years, she shall fall along with rest of the world allied with her. Eventually after the distress of those days, when cities lie in ruins, the people of God shall know their identities and many shall return into their homeland, Israel.

5. As It Was During The Great Plagues Of Egypt (Ex 7-11)

Many centuries after Joseph there ruled a Pharaoh who never knew the Hebrews. He became the scorn of Israel and they cried for divine intervention. That Pharaoh would later on become a personification of the last day Pharaoh, the Antichrist. The ten plagues that destroyed Egypt will be the same plagues to come over America under the Antichrist embattled against the reincarnated Hebrew leader, Moses. Even the crossing of the Red Sea shall happen again.

6. As It Was In The Fall Of Israel And Judah (2Kings 17, 25)

The kingdom of Israel was divided due to King Solomon’s sins. Israel, during the reign of King David and Solomon was once the most powerful and wealthiest kingdom in the ancient world. It did not last long enough through a third generation. This kingdom parted and became the House of Israel in the north and House of Judah in the south. Consequently, also because of the sins of their kings, both kingdoms also fell. Civil strife, transgressing leaders and external threats precedes the fall of both Houses of Israel and Judah. The House of Israel fell first under King Shalmaneser, an Assyrian king. Then later on, the House of Judah fell too under King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. The Babylonian empire attained its pinnacle of glory after the conquest of Judah and its territory further extended to Egypt in the south which was also once a powerful kingdom.

Soon, the world will watch helplessly as the most powerful nations, Europe, Israel and the United States fall one after the other in that order under the hands of a king from Mesopotamia, then we will surely believe the end is near.

7. And Knowledge Shall Increase (Dan 12:4)

“But you, Daniel, close up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.” (NIV)

In the King James Version it says:

“But though, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased."

Both versions anyhow point to the going to and fro of many people and the increasing of knowledge.

No time is more appropriate than now-- now is the time close to the end. Likewise, man has reach the time when he could be able to understand the secrets of Daniel’s book as well as other prophecies. In today’s world of information, sharing of ideas has never been faster and easier through the use of computers and the information superhighway we call the Internet. For instance, the preparation of this book was made a lot faster and easier through the use of a computer— the combination of word and graphics processing, electronic references, the internet, and a computer Bible. Man’s knowledge has made the world to “shrink” into just one small community. It is now possible for one man to monitor the world and lead through a click of a finger, reach out to anyone in just a few seconds and go from place to place anywhere around the world no matter how remote in under a day.

Knowledge without the fear of the Lord is dangerous combination. He may even use his inventions and discoveries to challenge the existence of God. Man needs wisdom and not mere knowledge.

Daniel wrote that many shall run to and fro as one sign of the end. In 1994, more than two billion passengers used the world’s airports according to the annual report of Geneva-based Airports Council International in March 1995. That is the equivalent of one third of the world’s population meaning at least one in every three person went to or fro by air. Nearly half the passenger arrivals, departures or transits were registered in North America— 998 million, followed by Europe with 632 million and the Pacific with 268 million. This figure is expected to rise even higher and it excludes travel by land and sea.

Nobody Knows the Day and the Hour

Biblical prophecies usually equate a day as one year using the Hebrew calendar but when Jesus warned us of His unexpected return, a prophetic day is a literal 24-hour day, that is, obviously because His return will have an element of surprise. He wanted us to get prepared every day, each hour.

When He prophesied of the signs of His coming, for instance the lightning that become visible from the East even unto the West, it is already possible to estimate the time of His return. The Day of the Lord as we know is one-year period, one year of darkness and chilling winter. Therefore, we may be able to determine the time of His appearing at least to the nearest months, or weeks but we can never be sure to the exact day and the hour. But the message is spiritual preparedness and not curiosity. He had stressed so many times in plain words and parables that we should always get ready regardless of any eventuality.

Jesus was both man and God when He came down to earth for the first time in flesh. He had to be a man so He could die and sacrifice Himself for us and He has to be God also so that His life would not be worth just one but billions (of all kinds) of life. It takes the life of the Creator to save all His own creation. His disclosures to His disciples about the signs of the end were made in His capacity as a man. He was just like us, needing constant breath of the Holy Spirit as we do our daily tasks. He refused to be called good (Mk 10:18) for doing good was not by His own credit but the Father. His words were not His own for they came from the Father (Jn 12:49). Also it was His act of humility not to speak yet in behalf of the Father the things not yet under the Son’s authority.

He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. (Acts 1:7)

But when Jesus was giving the Great Commission just before He ascended to Heaven, He also told His disciples that all power and authority were given to Him.

Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. (Matt 28:18)

I am sure He knew all along the exact hour of His coming since His and the Father’s Spirit are one. Even mortal man has the power to understand the deep things of God if he is willing to receive the Spirit of God. If we have His Spirit then we are one with Him and we know His thoughts. Read:

...but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him?  In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. (1Cor 2:10-12)

The prophecy on the signs of the end of age is written primarily to warn the majority, those of little faith. Nevertheless, He said let us keep watch. We need to keep watch not only for His sudden coming but also on the sudden rapture if we call it that way.

“Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.” (Matt 24:40-41)

There are three raptures that would take place. The first will happen before the tribulation period when the chosen will be snatched off and flown away to the Desert of Nations (Greenland) where they shall be taken care of for times, a time and half a time or three and one–half years to become the army of God in the Day of the Lord (read chapter 6 in the book or read the article Is The Popular and Traditional Rapture Doctrine Biblical?). The second rapture shall take place after the Great Tribulation or before the Day of the Lord, meaning they are those who will experience the distress under the Antichrist. They are those who had endured the sufferings to the end and never bowed to false gods and the Antichrist. The first rapture is sudden and an instant travel to the wilderness while the second rapture is a long journey toward the Promised Land, around Mount of Olives where Jesus shall descend to. Finally, the third will be just before the Battle of Armageddon when all those who journeyed to the Promised Land will be caught up together in the clouds above Jerusalem to meet Jesus Christ in the air as He is descending down from heaven to make war against those who pursued to destroy them.

In between, there is much time for all to decide, get prepared, and repent. Expect that those days shall never be easy – it is planned that way to weaken the soul for us to seek God. God is a merciful God, loving and patient. But we need His Spirit to strengthen for the temptation in those days shall be great that even the elect may fall as Jesus said, “if it were possible” (Matthew 24:24).

Jesus again warned us in Luke 21:34–36:

“Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”

Now, if you ask me when specifically will the end comes, the most accurate answer is, no one knows the day and the hour, but we can approximate the year. Here's one sign: When we see the eminent downfall of the three nations of Europe namely, Italy, France and Great Britain, the end  or Christ's Second Coming is within seven years away. That to me is not too far away and still be within the lifetime of many of us.
