The Book of Zechariah - Part 5

7. The woman in a basket

The seventh vision of Zechariah is about a woman in a basket covered with lead and then this basket was carried away by two stork-winged women to the valley of Shinar or Babylon to build a house for herself.

Zech 5:5-11
5 Then the angel who was speaking to me came forward and said to me, "Look up and see what this is that is appearing."
6 I asked, "What is it?"
He replied, "It is a measuring basket." And he added, "This is the iniquity of the people throughout the land."
7 Then the cover of lead was raised, and there in the basket sat a woman! 8 He said, "This is wickedness," and he pushed her back into the basket and pushed the lead cover down over its mouth.
9 Then I looked up — and there before me were two women, with the wind in their wings! They had wings like those of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between heaven and earth.
10 "Where are they taking the basket?" I asked the angel who was speaking to me.
11 He replied, "To the country of Babylonia to build a house for it. When it is ready, the basket will be set there in its place."

The seventh vision might have puzzled Zechariah the most. He certainly did not have an idea about the meaning of what he saw. There is no better time to understand this except the last days, our time, since we are very close to the Second Coming.

Let us break down the passage verse by verse. First, the angel who showed the vision said that the basket (or an ephah in other manuscripts) is the iniquity of the people through the land. Therefore, the basket itself is a sin that was measured. It simply symbolizes the sin of the whole land, the land of Israel. In our times, all the believers. By the way, an ephah is an ancient Hebrew unit of dry measure which is about 35 liters. We do not know how much ephah or how large the basket was but it should be big enough to fit the woman inside.

The Woman of Wickedness

Verse 7 says, "the cover of lead was raised, and there in the basket sat a woman!" It was probably the angel who raised the cover of lead so Zechariah could see inside. Immediately, the lead cover was pushed back  in verse 8 after Zechariah saw the woman who is actually wickedness. The lead cover symbolizes how tight the basket should be secured so that the woman or the "Wickedness" can not escape. So we see here a basket which pictures iniquity and the content, a woman which is the Wickedness. Apparently, the iniquity has been sealed tight to prevent it from spreading. It is like a deadly deadly virus with no known cure that has been kept in a tightly sealed flask to prevent a pandemic.

Verse 9 shows two women with wings of a stork. Stork is a migratory bird which can fly a very far distance non-stop. And here it says, they have the wind in their wings. Somebody gave them power in addition to their strength to fly long distances. Maybe because their load is heavy and dangerous with the need to deliver fast to a destination.

So Zechariah was eager to find an answer in verse 10, "Where are they taking the basket?"

The angel answered, "To the country of Babylonia to build a house for it. When it is ready, the basket will be set there in its place." In some manuscripts, Babylonia is also written as the "land of Shinar" which is actually the same. However, Assyria at its height was occupied later by Babylon and both were founded by the same person, Nimrod (Gen 10:9-11), a mighty hunter before the Lord.

The meaning of the vision

Now let us analyze the vision. I prayed hard to God for wisdom in interpreting the seventh vision and after a while, it become clear to me that the Bible gave its own interpretation about this mysterious vision.

The vision covers an entire story of Israel starting from their downfall leading up to the last days. Israel's downfall was brought about by their own inequity which started with King Solomon after he became an idolater (1 Ki 11:9–13). Then Israel became two kingdoms, the north became the House of Israel and then the Kingdom of Judah in the south. [Related: Israel, The Divided House] Until today, the vision is still in effect but Israel already expanded to cover the whole world. All believers become part of Israel (Gal 3:26-29) as a result of the washing of mankind by the blood of Jesus Christ.

But take note that it was only the inequity that was transported to Babylon, not the people although we know that both northern House of Israel and the House of Judah were taken captives to Assyria and Babylon respectively. The vision is not a physical transport of inequity. It is the inequity and wickedness of Israel that resulted to their downfall. The two women symbolizes the divided kingdom which fell by becoming prostitutes with the nations surrounding her. Ezekiel 16 tells a lot about Israel's prostitution. The kingdom of Israel was likened into an adulterous woman heaping sin after sin. Here are few verses from that chapter.

Ezek 16:23-29
23 "'Woe! Woe to you, declares the Sovereign LORD. In addition to all your other wickedness, 24 you built a mound for yourself and made a lofty shrine in every public square. 25 At the head of every street you built your lofty shrines and degraded your beauty, offering your body with increasing promiscuity to anyone who passed by. 26 You engaged in prostitution with the Egyptians, your lustful neighbors, and provoked me to anger with your increasing promiscuity. 27 So I stretched out my hand against you and reduced your territory; I gave you over to the greed of your enemies, the daughters of the Philistines, who were shocked by your lewd conduct. 28 You engaged in prostitution with the Assyrians too, because you were insatiable; and even after that, you still were not satisfied. 29 Then you increased your promiscuity to include Babylonia, a land of merchants, but even with this you were not satisfied.

Israel was pictured as woman in prostitution with her neighbours. In the Bible, spiritual corruption is commonly symbolized as prostitution. Ultimately, Babylon will be a kingdom that will not only ruin all people physically but also spiritually. That wickedness of Israel that was symbolized as a woman tightly sealed in the basket and carried away to Babylon as her base will soon be opened like a Pandora's box that will spread evil around the world. It has already taken place for a long time and nobody knew.

The Woman of Wickedness in the Book of Revelation

In the Book of Revelation, the woman in the basket is portrayed as the woman no longer imprisoned in the basket but proudly sitting on a scarlet beast like a queen, freely spreading her prostitution not only in Israel but also throughout the world. The lead cover was apparently removed to release the woman then the spiritual disease quickly spread into all nations.

Rev 17:1-6
1 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits on many waters. 2 With her the kings of the earth committed adultery and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries."
3 Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a desert. There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. 4 The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries. 5 This title was written on her forehead:

6 I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus.

The Promised Redemption of Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ promised redemption from all of the evils the Woman of Wickedness has spread. All Christian are warned to flee from the Woman of Wickedness. Babylon will fall.

Rev 18:4-10
4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say:
"Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; 5 for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes. 6 Give back to her as she has given; pay her back double for what she has done. Mix her a double portion from her own cup. 7 Give her as much torture and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself. In her heart she boasts, 'I sit as queen; I am not a widow, and I will never mourn.' 8 Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine. She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

9 "When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her. 10 Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry:

"'Woe! Woe, O great city, O Babylon, city of power! In one hour your doom has come!'
