Weapons Or God?

We see the world today filled with chaos in all fronts-- economic recession, political instability, joblessness, and all sort of uncertainties. Because of these, nations even through ancient the times developed a growing need to be stronger, mean, and determined. We see nations in our generation allied or bonded together as a way of strengthening their common interests so that they become like a big kingdoms of nations. We have nations of North Atlantic grouped as NATO, the Middle East as MEA or Middle East Alliance, SEATO for South East Asia and so on. It is common belief that in unity there is strength. But more is needed to attain supremacy. Nations resorted to arms build-up, buy weapons spending so much of the nation's resources as a deterrent to war, so everybody says. Now nations wants to acquire or develop nuclear arms as an ultimate weapon of destruction. With so much resources spent on military build-up, is there really a need to be so powerful militarily? Because of unbelief of God's protection, men relied on their own power and strength. God said in the book of Zechariah:

...'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit ,' says the LORD Almighty. (Zech 4:6)

According to the "Global Issues" report, arms sales in 2008 grew to a level of the cold war era despite growing economic hardships throughout the world. Nations have prioritize military budget over and above social services and economy. The report has this to say:

World military spending has now reached one trillion dollars, close to Cold War levels.

As summarized from the Military Balance, 2000/2001, by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (October 2001), for the larger arms-purchasing nations each year:

  • Arms procurement is normally 20-30% of their military budgets

  • The main portion is usually on operations, maintenance and personnel

  • Some 40 to 50 billion dollars are in actual deliveries, (that is, the delivery of sales, which can be many years after the initial contract is signed)

  • Each year, around 30-35 billion dollars are made in actual sales (agreements, or signing of contracts).

What else that the prophecies and the Bible tell us about this world's arms build-up?

First, let us take a look who sell and buy the weapons. According to the same report, the biggest arms supplier is the United States of America.

The chart at right from Global Issues gives us a picture that somehow a God's nation is again involved. We can see that in 2008, the US is the biggest arms supplier with a share of 41% of the world's arms market followed by Russia by a wide margin. The US is blessed by God with immense wealth and power so that it has produced for herself weapons that can kill all humanity many times over. It has so much that it can sell weapons to all countries who are equally blinded that weapons alone can protect them. America has the technology no other country has. It has the wealth, global influence, she is the world's policeman, 'protector' of world peace. We lament that the world is not safer as it was 10 years ago. Technology and weapons has proven that it failed to protect world peace.

Why did I say that God's nation was involved? USA is the descendant of Manasseh, brother of Ephraim, sons of Joseph, the son of Israel. They were blessed to become the greatest nations in the last days which we are in now. Read the topics Origin of Nations and Journey of Israel to understand better.

To be blessed with supremacy over enemies and great wealth is a very great reward that demands great responsibility and stewardship. God's blessings are holy and should only be used for a holy purpose. In the ancient times of Israel, the nation went to many wars against more powerful nations or group of nations and won but only if they remain obedient unto God. They were easily defeated if they commit even for a single sin. Now we see the same scenario. The US has never won wars since WWII and we can not question why. Israel's generation in Manasseh is committing more and greater sins these days than their forefathers. It has failed with Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Her worst enemies are still around hidden in the population or in the mountains. Other enemy nations are building up their military and the US is getting helpless to counter the growing threats.

The US is also Egypt because Manasseh, their forefather is a son to an Egyptian mother. Her Egyptian forefathers are very powerful, wealthy and mean. So is America today. But the Scriptures have prophecies for the US or modern Egypt today.

Even during the time of Isaiah God had already warned us in advance not to rely on wealth and weapons but on God alone in anticipation of the fulfillment of the promise to Abraham and also down to Ephraim and Manasseh. God had seen in advance that the US (or Egypt) is the source of strength of so many nations through the weapons she sells. Read the prophecy that is right now happening before eyes:

“Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots and in the great strength of their horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel, or seek help from the LORD. Yet he too is wise and can bring disaster; he does not take back his words. He will rise up against the house of the wicked, against those who help evildoers. But the Egyptians are men and not God; their horses are flesh and not spirit. When the LORD stretches out his hand, he who helps will stumble, he who is helped will fall; both will perish together.” (Isa 31:1-3).

Horses and chariots here are symbols meaning weapons of war. God did not fail to fulfill His promise of world supremacy to His nation, yet it requires careful stewardship on the part of this nation in utilizing the blessings. Power oftentimes misled us from relying on God alone. And America is guilty of that sin. Both the giver and receiver of weapons shall fall. That means all those who buy weapons for the purpose of relying in those weapons for protection instead of God alone shall fall.

The Bible also foretold that Egypt's plans will fail one after another in the last days. Read in Isaiah 19:3-4.

The Egyptians will lose heart, and I will bring their plans to nothing; they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead,
the mediums and the spiritists. I will hand the Egyptians over to the power of a cruel master, and a fierce king will rule over them," declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.

Dan 11:42-43
He (Antichrist) will extend his power over many countries; Egypt will not escape. He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver and all the riches of Egypt, with the Libyans and Nubians in submission

The verses we just read is very dire and dark warning to the Americans. She is all bent in destroying her enemies, those who terrorize and harm her citizens. So many plans and billions of dollars has been spent to achieve that goal. But the Bible is very clear that her enemy, the Antichrist will ultimately destroy her, rule over her and all her plans will lead to nothing. The Bible teaches the only one simple way to achieve true peace-- repentance, acceptance and obedience to Jesus Christ, the only way to the Father. We should all go back to Him who created all things and determines our fate regardless of how poor or wealthy or powerful we are.
